Students in Music Elite, focus on musical expression that is tailored to their interests. They are encouraged to practice Music genres and styles that are of interest to them while focusing on their unique areas of strength and growth. The program also strives to improve students’ performance levels, sense of professionalism, and personal responsibility. Thus, we combine the vocal technique and creative development with opportunities for live performing experience. Overall, students are encouraged to build technique and stylistic identity as well as gain confidence in their abilities.

I am currently a Vocal Major why should I join:
You will be able to take the skills you develop in our sessions directly to the stage learning not only how to sing, but how to communicate effectively with a live audience whether you’re interpreting contemporary styles or showcasing your original material. You are also encouraged to develop other musical talents and abilities in hopes of sharing your passion in the spring concert with the larger Dock Street School community.

 

Poetry

As Dock Street School Poets, students explore the art of poetry with an emphasis on self-expression. Students will listen to, read poetry, and share their own poetry with the group and the larger Dock Street School community to inspire, move and honor other people, forging deeper interpersonal connections. Through this form of expression, students strengthen their language, writing, and speaking skills, enhancing their literacy appreciation. Students are provided opportunities for recitals, publications, and collaborative performances.Personal Benefits: Poetry fosters emotional expression and healing through self-expression and exploration of one’s feelings. It provides a safe way to vent, examine, and understand our feelings thereby, helping us to become more attuned to what’s going on in our hearts and minds. With its emphasis on symbolism, metaphor, and imagery, poetry writing fosters and promotes creative thinking and prompts us to look at the world from a variety of perspectives, which fosters empathy and expands one’s worldview.Literary Benefits: research has shown that poetry motivates students to read, builds phonemic awareness, and builds essential skills like vocabulary, fluency, expression, and writing. Through writing poetry, we gain command of the language, cultivate a robust vocabulary, and master literary devices. As each of these skills is crucial for our students to become strong readers and writers, we encourage you to participate in our Poetry program offering.

At the Dock Street School, we believe in forming lasting connections with our young people and that those connections are required for our scholars to grow into confident and capable young adults. To that end, we aim to provide our students with positive, supportive, and caring, mentors who notice our students – and their potential. Mentors engage students in strength finding and building, listen to their concerns, examine perspectives, seek resolutions, and open doors of possibilities. From connecting students to a program that deepens their interests to spark their curiosity in a future career field, our mentors help students explore their full potential. Our goal is to help prevent early drug use and inappropriate online communication, promote college- and career- readiness, and have positive mental health outcomes. In weekly sessions topics discussed may include but are not limited to; integrity, healthy decision making, conflict resolution, effective communication skills, social media do’s and don’ts, reviewing students BAG (Behavior, Attendance, and Grades), student-generated topics of interest, etc.If you are looking for a sense of belonging and community, this is the place for you!

V-Elms Mentoring Program

V-ELMS – is a unique supplementary education model, functioning both in-person and remotely in two New York City middle schools. We follow our underserved BIPOC students from middle school into high school with our virtual V-ELMS Matriculation Highway Program (VMHP) curriculum and then guide them to apply to colleges when seniors, with our virtual V-ELMS Gateway Program (VGP).

Students will receive instruction in a range of performance indicators including common core standards for ELA and Math that are essential for success on the state exams. Our preparation materials will reflect the new test formats and priority common core standards. We will supplement our materials with the fundamental skill that our students require to achieve conceptual understanding when we see that a student or group of students may be lacking in important underlying skills. Because our instructors are Dock Street Staff that engage students during daily core instruction, we also customize our approach to meet the areas of strength and improvement of each individual student. We are thus able to provide an experience that is comprehensive, tailored, and effective!What does this look like in weekly sessions: In ELA, students focus on close reading and analyzing texts. Students answer questions in various formats, engage in discussions, and make inferences based on written text and/or videos. Students as reflective learners choose individual strategies, from the multiple strategies introduced, to help them navigate through text and question types. In Math, students are engaged in an analysis of real-world, multi-step word problems helping them conceptualize number relationships and deepen mathematical thinking. Videos, images, and models, and multiple representations are used to form mathematical connections within and across topics.  

8th Grade Algebra Regents 

Algebra Instructor: J. CaizaguanoWhen: Wednesdays 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Students receive step-by-step review and practice they need to prepare for the Regents Exam. We will cover all Algebra I topics prescribed by the New York State Board of Regents. Students will work in school groups and can receive individualized attention on areas of struggle. Step-by-step demonstrations and examples will be discussed and analyzed. Students will be exposed to multiple sample question types which will be fully explained, reviewed, and practiced. This will foster a deeper conceptual understanding of Algebra 1 topics and will result in higher performance gains

 

 

8th Grade Living Environment Regents Prep

When: Wednesdays 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
The Living Environment Regents prep course is designed with students in mind and encompasses all topics prescribed by the New York State Board of Regents which is tailored to deliver incredible results. Each session will include brief, clear topic reviews given by our instructor, lessons will include images, videos, etc. to foster deep conceptual understanding. Students will then complete regents practice assignments which will be reviewed and discussed within the session so that students are able to assess their strengths and areas of improvement. This method of study will be done in small units so that students have the time and space necessary to practice content within their areas of improvement, make connections and form the necessary conceptual understanding. Within each small unit, students will have to opportunity to answer practice questions, review their answers, and receive targeted explanations to clarify misconceptions.

 

 

Beam Afterschool

Beam Center’s after-school program at Dock Street School will offer students a series of STEM-based, hands-on projects intended to build skills, foster a sense of agency, and celebrate student accomplishments. The projects that our team will lead for students are called Fundamentals. Fundamentals include disciplines such as woodworking, audio electronics, circuitry, cardboard construction, and more. Students will build individual projects that combine different fundamental skills that they can use and take home. Examples include a Bluetooth Boombox that combines audio circuitry and cardboard construction, a UV Journal that incorporates circuitry and craft, and Light Painting (an integration of photography, electronics, and design). The after-school program will be led by Project Leaders, a team of teenagers who have apprenticed with our organization and received extensive training in the development and facilitation of hands-on projects. 

 

 

Art of the Podcast

Who: All GradesWhen: Mondays and Wednesdays 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Starting Jan 19This new media storytelling lab will prepare students to conduct interviews with insight and care. Ethics and a journalistic sense of what shapes an authentic narrative will inform our approach to this essential element of audio, video, and print journalism. Our instructional team, guest speakers, and media experts will guide students as we explore new media storytelling technologies ranging from podcasts to short-form videos. Design-thinking and collaboration with peers will be essential to mastering the process of crafting, recording, and editing final portfolio projects.

 

 

Cooking

Who: All GradesWhen: Mondays  3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Instructor: Ms. Morris

The class will consist of the preparation of food. Learning timely preparations of cooking. Different ways to cook different dishes using the same ingredients. Learning how to shop and read the units on purchasing meats. How to make reasonably priced dishes when on a low budget. How to look for sale. What is budget-friendly shopping when in college or low on money? How and where to look for food on sale and read the circulars. Learning temperature for cooking and storage. 

This class is at maximum capacity. Registration is closed.

 

 

Dock Street Soccer Team

 Dock Street CoEd Soccer Team is supported by experienced coaches to improve the team’s technical, tactical, and fitness skills. Dock Street soccer team competes in the Middle School Athletic League and against the strong local non-league competition. 

 

 

Capoeira

Who: All GradesWhen: Thursdays 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Instructor: Pena Verde 

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. In this class, the students will build strength, flexibility, balance, a sense of rhythm, and awareness of their own bodies.  They will also play music and learn some Portuguese. Training Capoeira builds self-esteem and allows the student to develop a sense of identity as an individual, a member of a nurturing community, and a member of a global society. 

 

 

 

SHSAT Prep with AdmissionSquad

Who: 7th Graders and Accelerated 6th GradersWhen: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30 pm – 4:45 pmDiagnostic day January 18thClass starts January 25thSHSAT Test Prep is an extensive enrichment program designed for high-performing 6th and 7th graders, allowing them to take the SHSAT in 8th grade. Admission into the specialized high schools is based solely on this one exam, the SHSAT. The specialized high schools are the following: Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Brooklyn Latin, High School of Math, Science and Engineering at City College (HSMSE), American Studies at Lehman, Staten Island Tech, and Queens Science at York College. AdmissionSquad prepares middle schoolers (and their parents) for the process through test prep, application counseling, academic enrichment, and high-quality mentorship. AdmissionqSquad’s mission is to ensure that all New Yorkers, regardless of race or economic status, have an opportunity to attend New York City’s top public high schools.

 

 

SuperVibes DJ Academy

Who: All GradesWhen: Tuesdays 2:30 pm – 4:30 pmSuperVibes DJ Academy teaches our youth the technical, creative, cultural, and entrepreneurial aspects of DJing. Our scholars love music, and our curriculum feeds their curiosity for music, hip hop & DJ culture. Lessons plans are created to be fun & engaging for the students! Students will learn to scratch, mix, & create playlists, all to prepare them to DJ actual live events!

 

 

Spanish

Who: 7th & 8th GradesWhen: Fridays 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

The Dock Street School believes that enjoying and learning a new language provides individuals with many mental, social, and economic benefits. This program allows our 7th and 8th-grade students to continue with language acquisitions that we are currently unable to provide during the school day programming. Our program is designed to help students with continued development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. This is done through activities that include, role plays, conversational practice, image/video, reading, and writing exercises. The program aims to enhance students’ fluency, through a heavy emphasis on conversation.Furthermore, students will be able to explore the cultural understanding of Spanish-speaking countries and the Latino community. The course will include videos, songs, field trips (example: Cuban Center or a Spanish Theater). If you are interested in continuing your Spanish language acquisition for enjoyment (you liked learning Spanish in 6th grade), personal reasons (your family has a vacation planned to a Spanish speaking country, you want to be able to communicate with family members that are all Spanish speaking, ect.), or you understand the needs of a global economy (you will need to be fluent in multiple languages for your future career of interest), this is the club for you!
